Contemporary Handbuilt Ceramics by Reiner Kuske

Welcome to my studio in Mahana, near Nelson, New Zealand. I create handbuilt ceramic vessels and sculptural forms that explore texture, memory and the quiet beauty of imperfection. Each piece develops slowly through coil and slab construction, with an emphasis on surface, form and the tactile qualities of clay. Rather than producing functional ware in large numbers, I make individual works that invite contemplation and reward close observation.

A Ceramic Journey

After a career spanning more than four decades in the optical industry, clay became a new way of seeing the world. My practice has grown through curiosity, experimentation and a fascination with traditional ceramic techniques.

I work primarily in stoneware and terracotta, often using terra sigillata and layered surface treatments to create subtle, tactile finishes. Inspiration comes from Japanese ceramics, the New Zealand landscape, and conversations with the materials themselves as each piece evolves.

Explore the Collections

My work is organised into collections that reflect different ideas and stages of exploration.

Emerging Earth explores growth, geological processes and transformation. Surface Stories focuses on texture, layering and the expressive possibilities of ceramic surfaces. The Moon Cycle examines cycles, time and quiet reflection through a series of handbuilt vessels. Ngā Wāhine celebrates strength, identity and the human form.
